The Travelers Have Arrived
This is quite extraordinary work – I expect it gained your attention the moment you saw it. It was created by husband and wife, Gillie and Marc Schattner who work together to craft art as one. This piece – called The Travelers Have Arrived is currently part of the Sculpture by the Sea Exhibition in Bondi, Australia. The rugged Australian coastline certainly makes a stunning backdrop for art.
The couple are known for applying the, at first sight, somewhat bizarre imagery of the animal-human hybrid to their work. I was immediately drawn by this – it leaves so much to the imagination I had a backstory for the three figures, which are made from bronze painted fiberglass, created almost immediately.
The description by the artists goes like this: The work is an attempt to transform ordinary matter into something extraordinary. We believe in a visual narrative that makes people smile. Well, if that’s the criteria it works for me. How is it for you?
