OySpaceMan! - Make Your Own Doctor Who Hat
You may remember a few months ago we featured the fantastic OySpaceMan Hat, inspired by the Tardis (the time machine from the BBC TV series Doctor Who).
Well, now that the weather has well and truly turned, we thought we would remind you of its existence and bring you a little news! If you would prefer to crochet the hat yourself rather than buying it, Lorna Watt at Knits for Life has now released the pattern. This is such a great hat - it fulfills two functions after all. First, it is something that will keep your head warm in the winter and remind yourself what an Über Fan you are at the same time.
If you are not too good at crochet you can still get the hat for an extremely reasonable price here. The name of the hat was inspired by the way that the Doctor's companion, Amy Pond, occasionally attracts his attention. The OySpaceMan Hat is itself more than a little reminiscent of the Tardis. the famous blue box which transports the Time Lord through that and relative dimensions. Designed by Lorna Watt, there was just one thing missing - a scarf to go with, something which Lorna (with perhaps a nod to the Doctor's fourth incarnation?) was more than happy to add.
Lorna says of her creation: "A scarf was a must for this hat, since it adds to the tribute, but I didn't want it to be too similar to that icon. Instead, it's designed to look like a time machine with the lights on. I used a raised stitch pattern to create the effect of the wood paneling. There's a pocket at the end of the scarf, and I swear it's bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. I used a yarn made from 100% recycled fabric for the right weathered look. The search for a perfect button led me to this tribute to our time traveler's fob watch. Finally, I named it after my favorite line, Oy, space man!"
You may have been wondering where you can get your hands on one of these wonderful creations. Take a look at Lorna's Etsy store - each hat is individually crafted so you can be sure that, even if your head is bigger on the outside than it is, oh never mind(!), this winter you will be as snug as a baby adipose in a rug.
